Basic find options

The Kind section of the Find window contains two pop-ups that can be used in tandem to limit searches to specific kinds of items. If neither option is checked or this section is hidden, then all types of items can be found in searches.

Use the left pop-up to specify a general class of item for which you wish to search. The options are:

Is a file

Strictly speaking, a file is not a folder, but because packages and bundled documents are displayed in the Finder and treated as if the were files, packages are treated as files for the purpose of applying this option. To limit a search to true files and exclude packages, use the option in the right pop-up in conjunction with this option.

Is a document

Is an image file

Is an audio file

Is a movie file

Is a text file

Is stationery

Is an alias

Is a symbolic link

Is not an application

Is not a document

Use the right pop-up to limit searches to specific subclasses of the kind currently shown in the left pop-up. The contents of this pop-up menu will change depending the current item in the item kind pop-up on the left.
